A brown eagle strikes and clutches a white plastic drone in midair against a blue sky
Golden moment.
I’m such a novice at identifying raptors. I think this might be a juvenile bald eagle. Can any more experienced birders confirm?
Golden Eagle, maybe. I saw one closeup once, on Soldier's Summit, Utah. It was larger than the fencepost.
kinda cool that they have a strap on their talons that takes out the propellers and then they are able to grab them

Unit containing 20 guitar pedals built into one console. One of the pedals is called BA FUZZ.

I've met the guy who makes this, we've played a show with his band. He has created all these small no-knob effects that you dial in with little trim pots and then just switch on and off, and he'll build any number of them into this kind of mega board to have them all together.
@wjcstp Cool!
@wjcstp do you know of Super Larry amps? He’s here in MSP, too. An old coworker did some design work for him a while back.

my pants feel weird
@bencmeissner I just read about them in Racket magazine, they look cool. There have been a few amp builders around here over the years (Eden and Savage for two), good to see some new ones coming in too.

Photo of protesters at No Kings rally. One holding a sign reading "Free balls for members of congress who lost theirs'
Heyyyyy that's a good one!!
(We had such a huge turnout in my tiny town for the No Kings protest- previously it was just a block of protestors but this time it literally stretched 2 miles along the main "street" (highway) aaaaaand the local weekly was forced to cover it. I was very pleased, but lightly disappointed that once again there were no amazing signs to post here. And yes my sign was boring too.)

They didn't _lose_ them, they happily gave them up.

It's better to show than to tell, so during your defense fart very loudly like I did in mine right after being asked a question. (true story)
Bringing baked goods to the defense was a tradition where my spouse got her PhD. Dunno what low-key bribe will work best at your university.
@williwaw eeep!
@ardgedee potato is making plans
“Uh. Usually there’s a ‘but’ that follows that phrase”
“Yeah you’re looking at it.”
“Yeah you’re looking at it.”
@williwaw you are a fucking legend

A photo of two men standing indoors with a painting behind them wearing ornate clerical dress. Pope Leo, in white, is holding a blue-and-red Cubs jersey labelled "LEO 14" and giving a tight-lipped smile. Patriarch Awa, in black and red and holding a cane, is grinning broadly.
source: https://bsky.app/profile...
Patriarch Awa III of the Assyrian Church of the East was *also* born in Chicago and, unlike White Sox fan Pope Leo, roots for the Cubs.

Is the patriarch holding an ornate religious object, or is he about to drop the mic?
@gormat I called it a cane in the alt text, but I think it might actually be some sort of ceremonial staff of office: https://www.facebook.com/photo...

Screenshot of NASA satellite combining the visual spectrum with temperature data to show convection of a storm, that shows a hurricane of extreme severity and a very tight hurricane eye hitting the island of Jamaica
At 895 mb & 192 mph/308 km/h winds, it ties the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane for strongest hurricane at landfall in the modern era as it directly hits Jamaica. To paraphrase two met folks' observations: it's the equivalent of a 30 mile wide EF-4 tornado hitting an area for hours. And to get that kind of pressure at sea level, the hurricane essentially displaced 3600 ft/1.1 km of the air column. Speechless.
If verified, it's also set a world record dropsonde gust of 252 mph as measured by a Hurricane Hunter aircraft (which for the second day in a row had to cut the mission short due to possible damage from turbulence).
Parts of Jamaica are forecast to get up to 36 inches/91 cm of rainfall. (edit: The flooding videos that have managed to get out so far are already extremely intense - the hilly nature of the island is making things far worse by channeling the water :( )
It now heads to Cuba, but will once again intensify in the very hot oceanic waters in the area before hitting Cuba's 2nd most populous region (if it stays on its current track).
Absolutely devastating for the people there.
"Absolutely stunning" gif of the eye itself as it approaches the island: https://bsky.app/profile...
More info here: https://yaleclimateconnections.org/2025...
(Just a reminder that the 1st thing the world's richest man did when he got some power was to disable USAID and other U.S. agencies that aid in disaster relief. And then a little baby shitstain ruined what was left.)

Saw Cory Doctorow today. Told him I was a "Friend of torrez", amongst other things, and he remembered and said he misses the yellow mustard.
I miss it too.

The Statue of Liberty, an enormous green metal statue of a woman wearing a robe and carrying a book and torch, stands against a gray sky. The statue stands on a brown stone base. In place of a torch, it is holding up a glowing white logo for the satirical publication The Onion. Quoting Thomas More, “The devil...the proud spirit...cannot endure to be mocked.” The painting is signed “Chris Silverman”.
