Me wearing a sweatshirt that says "Read books. Drink coffee. Fight evil."
I'm down at my sister's place for my birthday, being an extra set of hands while she recovers from surgery (she's doing well! it's a weird bone thing not a "get the cancer out" thing) and we did a very low key birthday hang here. Jim got me this sweatshirt and I really like it.

New Project — Ellie Fernald Wall Hangings

4 quilted wall hangings:
1. A fantastical dragon with a sunsettish sky behind it, its fire exhalations blown back over its head in the wind and its claws digging into a pile of rocks.
2. Several highly realistic cows in a field, one eating, one's head up but not visible, and the third lowing at the fourth wall, surrounded by a heart-shaped border of elaborately quilted flowers.
3. A zebra mid-gallop, behind layers of tall grasses that are, somehow, also a sky field with stars on a base of clouds.
4. Two cats on a windowsill deep enough to curl up on, one orange, and one grey with white mittens. Outside the window is a rich, dense flower garden, and behind that a neighbor's house where a tuxedo cat is looking at the foreground. Ellie used a panel of clear plastic for the window panel, which is shown in the up position.

Ellie Fernald was among my strongest influences as a child. She was in a performance troupe (music and vaudeville-style comedy) with my dad when I was in grade school, her house was a riot of fabulous art (both hers and others), and she had an inspirational collection of gorgeously illustrated children's books. I thought of her as a potter for the most part, because her entire basement was a pottery studio, but she was also an expert quilter and painter, and she explored many forms over her lifetime.

These are some wall hangings that have ended up in my dad's house, and my sister, Erin, and I are undertaking some restoration work on them — cleaning them, repairing some places where stitching has come undone, and in a couple of cases removing and repairing internal wooden frames that have broken. It's going to be a lot of work! But I'm excited to spend some time with these beautiful pieces, enjoying her painting and quilting brilliance.

A little bio sketch of Ellie : https://publicforms.whitworth.edu/art...

(So tempted to add this to the "Wonder Woman" shp :D)

The very interesting, but short, life of Denham Fouts

Truman Capote once joked that if Denham Fouts had accepted Adolf Hitler's advances, the Second World War might never have happened. It's the kind of outrageous claim that sums up Fouts perfectly: a man who left behind almost nothing of his own making, and yet somehow ended up at the centre of some of the twentieth century's most extraordinary company.

He never published a novel, painted a canvas or held a job for more than a few months. Instead, he became a muse to Capote, Christopher Isherwood and Gore Vidal, was kept in turn by a German baron, a Greek prince and a British lord, and briefly had a real Picasso hanging in his own apartment.

He died broke, addicted and largely forgotten, at 34.

"I've done the best I could with my life."

"This book is dedicated to Dr. John Sharpe of London, who in 1957, a decade before physicians in England could legally performa an abortion for any reason other than the health of the woman, took the considerable risk of referring for an abortion a twenty-two-year old American on he way to India.

Knowing only that she had broken an engagement at home to seek an unknown fate, he said, 'You must promise me two things. First, you will not tell anyone my name. Second, you will do what you want to do with your life.'

Dear Dr. Sharpe, I believe you, who knew the law was unjust, would not mind if I say this so long after your death:

I've done the best I could with my life.

This book is for you."

(Not my photo, but from the same storm). There were five areas in the Metro-Detroit area reporting funnel clouds and tornados this afternoon. My daughters go to a school that is a 40 minute drive. We got caught in the worst of the storm and had to take shelter in a gas station for 20 minutes until it passed.

neighborhood watch

A large, rectangular, harsh-looking face mounted on a pole. The face is frowning, craggy, and looks like it is made from tarnished greenish metal. In place of eyes, it has camera lenses. It stands against a mottled neon yellow-green sky, with a blurry city skyline in the background. A tiny red light glows near its upper left corner, while two dark birds perch on top. You probably have one of these in your neighborhood. The painting is signed "Chris Silverman".
